Fish Factory

A current-swept wall in the Somosomo Strait where pelagic schools — barracuda, trevally, jacks — mass in density driven by the same nutrient upwelling that fuels all Taveuni reef diving.

Overview

Fish Factory is a vertical drop-off wall site in the Somosomo Strait on Taveuni’s reef system, listed by Salt Diver Fiji alongside Purple Wall and The Zoo as one of the strait’s signature pelagic wall dives. The name reflects the volume of fish production enabled by the constant tidal nutrient flow through the strait. The wall drops to around 17 meters (recreational working depth) and features hard corals with soft coral displays on rocky wall faces in pinks, purples, yellows, and oranges according to Dive The World’s Taveuni guide. The site is noted as accessible to divers at various experience levels by some operator sources, though tidal current makes it more demanding than the lagoon sites. It is best dived as a rising-tide drift dive.

Marine Life

Schooling fish are the defining feature. Species confirmed at Fish Factory by multiple sources: schooling barracuda (chevron and blackfin species), bigeye trevally, grey reef sharks, jacks, dogtooth tuna, and Spanish mackerel. Fusiliers stream along the wall face. Schooling damsels and anthias are present on the wall structure. Moray eels and whitetip reef sharks are documented by Dive The World. Blue-spotted rays rest on sandy patches. Turtles are noted by operator accounts. Dive the World’s guide confirms soft and hard coral on the wall faces. Pelagics including manta rays may appear seasonally in the strait system.

Dive Profile

Position at the current-exposed edge where fish activity is highest. The wall ranges from shallow sections (3–8 meters) to 17 meters. Densest schooling action is at mid-depth (8–15 meters). Drift with the current along the wall, pausing in channel features where upwelling creates natural fish aggregation points. Total dive times of 50–65 minutes are typical given the manageable depths. Entry and Exit

Accessed by boat from Taveuni operators, often as part of a Somosomo Strait multi-dive day alongside Great White Wall or Rainbow Reef. The current that creates the fish action must be managed on entry — the guide briefs the drop point and drift direction before the dive. Deploy an SMB before ascending.

Tips and Recommendations

• Current intensity determines the spectacle: Fish Factory on a strong current is substantially better than at slack. Confirm tidal timing with your operator.
• Hold position in channel features: The wall has natural current breaks behind outcroppings. Using these as position points allows you to watch the schooling action without fighting the current.
• Shallow is better than deep here: The best fish action is in the 8–15 meter range. Descending to maximum depth means leaving the most productive zone.
• Pair with a macro dive afterward: Fish Factory burns through gas quickly in current. Follow it with Blue Ribbon Eel Reef or a shallow site for a contrasting second dive.

Safety Considerations

Current management is the primary challenge. The shallow depth means decompression is not a concern, but surface current can push divers away from the boat rapidly. Always carry and deploy an SMB before ascending. Confirm the current direction in the strait before the dive — the Somosomo Strait reverses current twice daily and diving into the wrong tidal phase significantly affects the experience and safety.

Photography

Fish Factory is made for wide-angle schooling fish photography. Dense barracuda or trevally formations with the wall structure provide layered subjects. Position below a barracuda school and shoot upward with a fisheye for the tornado formation — schools at Fish Factory naturally form this configuration in the current. For shark portraits, use fast shutter speeds and position toward the light to silhouette subjects.
