Gordon Rocks

The “washing machine” of the Galapagos — a submerged volcanic crater delivering the most reliable hammerhead encounters in the central islands.

Overview

Gordon Rocks is the remains of an eroded volcanic tuff cone, now largely submerged, with three rocks visible above the surface and four underwater pinnacles (three in the northern crater from 8–30 meters, one central pinnacle at 21–30 meters). The currents that funnel through and around this structure concentrate pelagic life and create the turbulent conditions that earned the site its nickname “the washing machine.” Widely regarded as the most challenging dive site operated out of Puerto Ayora, it requires a minimum of 20–25 logged dives at most operators. This is the single best site in central Galapagos for schooling scalloped hammerhead sharks, which aggregate in the crater and along the outer walls.

Marine Life

Schools of scalloped hammerhead sharks are the headline attraction, often seen cruising through the channel or circling the outer walls in groups ranging from a handful to dozens. Spotted eagle rays glide through in formation. Galapagos sharks patrol the deeper sections. Green sea turtles rest on ledges and rocky outcrops. Playful Galapagos sea lions weave among divers in the shallows. Golden rays, whitetip reef sharks, and large schools of barracuda round out the pelagic action. The rocky substrate hosts king angelfish, hogfish, and moray eels tucked into crevices.

Dive Profile

The dive descends inside the crater, through a rocky area that drops to a sandy bottom at 30 meters. Most of the dive takes place inside and around the submerged pinnacles, where divers tuck into the rocks and hold position against the current while scanning the blue for shark activity. The outer wall drops to approximately 60 meters — depth awareness is critical. Mid-dive, the guide may signal a move along the crater wall to a second vantage point. The ascent requires careful timing between surge cycles, and safety stops can be challenging due to the current and swell near the surface.

Entry and Exit

Giant stride entry from a day boat operating out of Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz. Negative entry is standard — full gear before the stride, immediate descent with no surface swim. The boat repositions during the dive to follow divers’ bubbles. Exit is by inflating an SMB during the safety stop for the panga to locate and retrieve divers. Conditions at the surface can be rough with significant swell.

Tips and Recommendations

  • Master negative entries and have solid current-diving experience before attempting this site
  • Carry a reef hook — holding position on the crater wall in strong current is far easier with one
  • Go early in the morning for the calmest surface conditions and best hammerhead activity
  • Wear a 7mm wetsuit or semi-dry — thermoclines can drop temperatures to 16-18°C without warning
  • Stay close to your guide and group; separation in these currents is dangerous

Safety Considerations

This is the most demanding dive in the Galapagos and not suitable for inexperienced divers. Strong and erratic currents create washing-machine conditions that can push divers into deep water or against rocks. Cold thermoclines can appear suddenly, dropping temperatures by 8-10°C. Surface conditions are frequently rough with significant swell. Equalize early and often during descent, as the rapid negative entry leaves no time for adjustment. Always carry an SMB, whistle, and mirror. Dive operators may cancel this site on short notice due to conditions.

Photography

Wide-angle is essential here — bring the biggest dome port you have for hammerhead schools against the blue water backdrop. The channel between the rock formations creates dramatic silhouette opportunities with sharks overhead. Sea lions in the shallows offer engaging close-up wide-angle subjects. Macro is impractical due to surge and currents. Shoot on high shutter speed (1/200+) to freeze motion in the turbulent water. Morning light penetrating the channel provides the best natural illumination.
