Broken Rock

Location: South Malé Atoll (southern reaches), Maldives Depth: 5–25 m Difficulty: Intermediate Entry: Boat

Overview

Broken Rock is an evocatively named pinnacle site where a submerged rock formation has fractured into a series of distinct structural elements, creating crevices, swim-throughs, and overhangs that provide exceptional habitat diversity. The jagged topography supports a rich mixture of encrusting organisms and shelters a greater variety of reef life than more uniform structures.

Diving

The dive explores the broken, complex surfaces of the pinnacle from its summit at around 5 m to the base at 25 m. The fractures in the rock create natural passages and chimneys that divers can navigate, where sunlight filters through to illuminate the coral growth within. Nurse sharks regularly rest in the larger hollows and overhangs.

The exposed surfaces facing the current are colonised by gorgonian sea fans and soft coral outcroppings. Hawksbill turtles graze on sponges in the mid-depth zone, and moray eels occupy the recesses throughout the structure. Small groups of grey reef sharks are often seen circling the pinnacle at depth.

Marine Life

  • Nurse sharks (resting in hollows)
  • Grey reef sharks
  • Hawksbill turtles
  • Moray eels
  • Gorgonian sea fans and soft corals

Practical Notes

The broken topography makes this site interesting but requires care with buoyancy to avoid disturbing the coral growth in the narrower passages. Suitable for intermediate divers. Visibility typically 15–25 m. Boat access from South Malé Atoll operators.
