Exit 5 + 6

Exit 5 + 6 is a paired exit mooring on the outer reef circuit in the central-southern Maldives, positioned on the mid-section of the reef between Exit 4 to the east and Exits 7-10 to the west, covering a particularly rich section of coral slope.

Overview

The pairing of Exits 5 and 6 mirrors that of Exits 1 and 2 — two adjacent moorings used alternately depending on current direction to ensure a comfortable ascent and pick-up regardless of tidal phase. The reef between these two exits spans one of the more colourful sections of the outer slope, with documented higher soft coral density on the deeper faces due to the current shadows created by a subtle reef feature here. Whip corals and sea fans grow to impressive sizes in the 15-22 meter range, and the current eddies in this zone concentrate plankton and small baitfish, attracting hunting trevally and tuna above the reef edge. The upper reef crest is a cleaning station area, with small wrasse stations visited regularly by parrotfish and surgeonfish in numbers that make this reef section particularly animated.

Marine Life

Whip corals and sea fans (well-developed), hunting trevally, tuna, parrotfish at cleaning stations, surgeonfish schools, grey reef sharks, moray eels, and dense soft coral on the current-influenced deeper faces.

Tips for Divers

The zone between these two exits is worth spending extra time on for the soft coral density and cleaning station activity. Approach the cleaning stations slowly and hover at a respectful distance to watch undisturbed fish behaviour. The current eddies around the reef feature at depth can make buoyancy more dynamic here than at the simpler sloping exits on either side.
