Ellaidhoo house reef

Ellaidhoo house reef is the fringing house reef surrounding Ellaidhoo Island in North Ari Atoll, one of the Maldives’ most praised resort reefs for beginner and training dives.

Overview

Ellaidhoo’s house reef wraps around the island and drops through a shallow terrace before reaching a gently sloping wall to around 15 meters. The reef is known for exceptional coral health, with dense staghorn and table corals along the upper slope providing habitat for a remarkable density of reef fish. Turtles are regular visitors and frequently rest on the coral heads, making this a favourite for underwater photographers seeking relaxed, close-approach shots. The shallow nature of the reef allows for extended bottom time, and the sheltered western side is often used for check dives and training. Moray eels, octopus, and blue-spotted stingrays are found tucked into crevices throughout the reef. Visibility is typically excellent, and current is minimal inside the sheltered lagoon approaches.

Tips for Divers

The house reef is accessible directly from the beach or by short boat transfer to the outer slope. Early morning dives are particularly rewarding for turtle encounters. The inner lagoon section is perfect for night dives with fluorescent coral and hunting lionfish. Strong current is rarely encountered here, making this an ideal first dive in the Maldives.
