Exit 1 and 2

Exit 1 and 2 are paired reef exit mooring points on the outer reef system near the southern atolls of the Maldives, part of an operationally numbered series used by local dive operators managing access to a multi-point reef system.

Overview

The “Exit” designations in this cluster mark the end-points of drift dives or the departure moorings for circuit dives along the outer reef and channel edges in this part of the Maldives. Exits 1 and 2 are positioned together and share a reef section characterised by sloping hard coral gardens transitioning to a sandy bottom at 25 meters. The outer reef face here receives moderate tidal flow that drives good fish density, with the coral slope supporting a typical Indo-Pacific reef community: parrotfish grazing the hard corals, surgeonfish in schools along the crest, and grey reef sharks circling deeper on the outer edge. The paired numbering suggests these exits are used alternately depending on current direction — operators choose the up-current exit to terminate a drift and permit a comfortable ascent. The reef between these two exits is continuous and forms a good standalone dive outside of drift operations.

Tips for Divers

If using this as a drift exit, ascend the reef slope and wait for the boat at the mooring while monitoring current and SMB. As a standalone dive, enter at depth and work the outer reef face before finishing on the coral crest. Adjacent numbered exits in this cluster offer similar conditions and can be combined on a two-tank programme.
