Exit 9

Exit 9 is a numbered reef mooring point on the outer reef circuit in the central-southern Maldives, positioned between Exits 8 and 10 on the northern arc of the exit series and providing access to a productive section of outer reef slope.

Overview

Exit 9 occupies a central position in the northern exit cluster, its reef section distinguished by a well-defined drop from the coral crest to the sandy slope below. The outer reef wall here features strong gorgonian sea fan growth between 15 and 22 meters — large fan structures oriented perpendicular to the prevailing current, capturing plankton and providing structure for seahorses, longnose hawkfish, and cryptic pygmy seahorses on the fan branches. The current-swept nature of the outer face at this depth range creates a productive feeding zone for pelagic fish, with schools of barracuda and dogtooth tuna regularly passing along the reef edge. The upper reef section above 10 meters is calmer and features turtle grazing sites and anemone gardens with resident clownfish. The combination of the deep fan zone, mid-reef turtle territory, and shallow anemone garden makes Exit 9 one of the more varied sites in the exit series.

Marine Life

Gorgonian sea fans (well-developed at 15-22 m), seahorses, longnose hawkfish, barracuda schools, dogtooth tuna, hawksbill turtles, anemonefish, grey reef sharks, and diverse reef fish.

Tips for Divers

Descend to the sea fan zone first and examine the fan branches carefully with a torch for seahorses and hawkfish — slow down and the rewards are substantial. The outer edge at 20-22 meters is the best position to intercept passing pelagics. Ascend through the mid-reef turtle territory and finish with the anemone gardens in the shallows for a satisfying three-zone dive.
