Moofushi
Moofushi is the outer reef dive site of Moofushi Island in South Ari Atoll, a consistently excellent site that combines a healthy outer reef wall with the abundant fish life and seasonal pelagic encounters characteristic of this productive part of Ari Atoll.
Overview
Moofushi Island sits in South Ari Atoll’s whale shark territory, and the outer reef that bears the island’s name reflects the productivity of these waters. The reef descends from the shallows in a clean face to around 25 metres, with well-maintained coral formations — both hard and soft — providing habitat for a dense reef fish community. Napoleonfish are a regular sight, often appearing close to divers with characteristic boldness. White-tip reef sharks are seen on the sandy reef base and along the deeper wall sections, and eagle rays occasionally sweep past. During the northeast monsoon season (November–April), the whale sharks that gather in South Ari Atoll are sometimes encountered at depth near this outer reef as well as at the surface.

- The reef base at 20–25 metres is the best zone for white-tip shark sightings.
- South Ari Atoll’s whale sharks are most reliably encountered with dedicated snorkel excursions; however, divers sometimes see them at depth near the outer reefs.
