Vilamendhoo Housereef

Vilamendhoo Housereef is the fringing reef surrounding Vilamendhoo Island Resort in South Ari Atoll, renowned as one of the finest house reefs in the Maldives. Whale shark sightings are possible year-round in South Ari Atoll, and the house reef’s position on this productive atoll means the resort’s guests enjoy excellent marine life without ever leaving the island’s jetty.

Site Conditions

  • Depth range: 2–15 m
  • Typical visibility: 15–25 m
  • Currents: Generally very mild in the protected lagoon zone
  • Best season: Year-round excellent; May–December for peak whale shark season

What to Expect

The house reef wraps entirely around the island, with the outer reef slope reaching 12–15 metres before dropping away more steeply. The reef crest is in exceptional condition, with dense hard coral coverage and prolific fish life habituated to regular diver presence. Hawksbill turtles graze on the reef virtually every day, often allowing close approach. Napoleon wrasse, resident nurse sharks, and large parrotfish are fixtures. The reef is particularly celebrated for whale shark encounters during the southwest monsoon season (May–October), when the nutrient-rich currents of South Ari Atoll draw these gentle giants to the surface to feed on plankton. Whale shark sightings from the jetty are not unusual, with snorkellers and divers regularly swimming with animals that cruise along the house reef at 5–8 metres depth.

Tips for Divers

Shore entry directly from the beach or jetty makes the house reef immediately accessible 24 hours a day. Night dives are highly productive, with octopus, cuttlefish, Spanish dancer nudibranchs, and large crabs regularly encountered on the sand. Whale shark encounters follow resort snorkelling guidelines: no touching, maintain a 3-metre distance from the animal’s head, and approach from the side rather than the front. The shallow depth profile is ideal for new divers but rewards advanced divers who move slowly and observe carefully.
